Mouth Guards: How They Can Protect Your Teeth

[ssba]

If you could imagine life right now without some of your front teeth, what do you think you would feel like? Unfortunately, this is a reality for many of our patients because they did not use the proper protection when they played sports or participated in recreational activities. Your front teeth are usually the ones damaged first because they stick out more than the others. If you think that you would become self-conscious if you lost your teeth, then it is time that you consider a mouth guard.

Mouth guards are able to provide you with the cushion and protection you need for your front teeth when you engage in sports and outdoor activities. These guards should ALWAYS be worn when there is a potential of dental trauma. Dr. Song recommends that you where the mouth guard even if there will not be any contact due to the risk of the ball hitting your mouth.

Mouth Guards You Can Choose From

There are a variety of mouth guards available for you to choose from, but this does not mean that they are all good and beneficial for you. In fact, the best type of mouth guard is one that is made custom to fit in your mouth, as it will provide you with the best protection. If you cannot get your hands on a custom-made mouth guard in time for your next game or sport, you should choose one of the other options available to you.

1. Custom Mouth Guard

A custom mouth guard is made by Dr. Song in Reno, NV. It is important for you to consider this type of mouth protector over the others because it offers the most protection. While it is the pricier option of the three we will present you with, it helps protect and prevent against trauma the best. It does take time for a custom mouth guard to be made, so bear this in mind as you make your decision.

2. Boil and Bite Mouth Guards

A boil and bite mouth guard is the next best option after a custom guard and should be used when your custom guard will not arrive in time. These types of mouth guards work by allowing you to place the material into boiling water, which will soften the plastic. You then bite down and the plastic forms to your teeth. This option is not as good as a custom guard, but it offers more protection than the last option on the list. Boil and bites can be found in any sporting store.

3. Stock Mouth Guards

Stock mouth guards can be found almost everywhere, but they do not offer you much protection. In fact, this option is often large and bulky within the mouth and can inhibit your natural breathing pattern as well. If you do not have an alternative, then you should, at minimum, choose a stock guard to protect your teeth as you play sports.

Caring for Your Mouth Guard

It is important to make sure you take care of your mouth guard. You should wash it after every use and make sure that it air dries and is then placed into an approved container to keep it safe. Remember, NEVER place your mouth guard into the sun or hot water.
